We started from rather humble beginnings, we bought a lucas mill to cut a few boards off our own property and found ourselves doing a bit of work for neighbours and friends.
The mill worked a treat, the timber was everything we expected but frankly we were not impressed, milling was hard work and loading and moving logs even harder .
However, it was clear that there was a need for on sight sawmilling. Landowners were unable to interest conventional mills in the relatively small quantities and if they could the cost of milling and transport made it to expensive.
We realized that if we had the equipment that made the job quick and easy and efficient we could offer a service that would get the job done and see the landowner receive a good return. We needed a Bobcat and a truck and they solved the problem.
So, in a nut shell we now specalise in on farm sawmilling. The cost is realistic enough that the land owner can save a dollar and we can make a dollar!
We like to think we are realistically environmentally aware and that we promote sustainable forestry. We know that with good management a 40 hectare block can provide timber indefinitly and so a steady, reliable income.
For example:
A hectare of mixed species of all ages can carry about 200 stems. If harvested at the rate of 4 trees per year it will be about 50 years before all of them are harvested. Of course as soon as you remove the first four they begin growing again so after fifty years they are available for harvest again. So the rotation will be 50 years and it will continue forever!
Fifty year rotation is probably double that of a plantation but it serves to illistrate the point.
With careful selection of the trees we can also improve the standard of the forest rather than degrade it, and still get a good return.
